The Austin Parks and Recreation Board has voted to recommend fair pay for SXSW artists.

The South by Southwest (SXSW), the spring music and technology festival in Austin, Texas, has become one of the most prestigious cultural events in the world. Historically, it has attracted artists and creative entrepreneurs from all over the world. However, amidst the celebration and joy, SXSW participants have also faced some unfavorable circumstances, particularly with regards to payment issues. In recent years, SXSW artists have taken action to fight for their work to be valued appropriately.

In this light, the Austin Parks and Recreation Board voted on June 1, 2021, to recommend fair pay for SXSW artists. The vote result indicated that the committee had passed the proposal to require SXSW to pay participants in a full council meeting.

Under this proposal, SXSW participants will receive fair compensation, aimed at encouraging full or part-time artists to take advantage of the music festival to increase their visibility and brand building. The proposal has gained numerous supports from artists and Austin residents.

The move has also been praised by the National Musicians’ Association and other music organizations which thanked the Austin Parks and Recreation Board for their decision and believed that it would help enhance the reputation of SXSW. Meanwhile, the proposal needs to garner a more extensive support in the city council to ensure it becomes a law that could be implemented in the future.
